I don’t have a green thumb when it come to indoor plants. Anything I try to grow indoors dies. Flowers that I receive seem to wilt away within hours. If you feel that you are in the same boat, then why not take a look again at fake flowers. I know that there has been a stigma with fake flowers. Maybe you were brought up believing that fake is just not where its at. However, fake flowers have come a long way! New and improved materials make fake flowers look real.
Pay Attention
The key to getting a real “fake” look, is to pay attention when you are shopping for fake flowers. Just the other day I headed over to our nearest craft store and found some great fake flowers and some not so great ones too. When deciding on which flowers to buy, remember that real flowers are varied in color and textures. You don’t want to purchase fake flowers that are all one color, or the stems and leaves have a plastic look or feel.
Try New Varieties
What is great about fake flowers is that the sky is the limit! You don’t have to choose varieties that just grow in your neck of the woods. Branch out, discover exotic flowers that will give your home a whole new look. Some current trends include potted greenery such as palms and cacti and even potted herbs. Hydrangeas are very popular this season as well.
Arrangement Matters
Don’t just throw a bunch of flowers in a vase or pot. Use a wire cutter to cut the stems apart and arrange the flowers as you would a real flower arrangement. Use floral foam in the bottom of a bowl or other object to hold the fake flowers in place. I recently arranged a Fall centerpiece using fake flowers and a cute red metal bucket that I found for 40% off. I added a bit of burlap ribbon for a bit of extra texture. Don’t be afraid to rearrange the plants and flower every so often. After all, real plants grow and change too!
There are so many vases, pots and other containers that will make your arrangement stand out. Find something bright and colorful that matches your design taste!
Mix and Match
Mix and match both live and fake flowers and plants in your home. Keep your guests guessing! If you choose real-looking fake flowers they probably won’t be able to tell what is fake and what is real.
Keep Them Looking Fresh
Just as you would with real flowers, you need to keep your fake flowers looking fresh. Sometimes the only reason I can tell that the flower or plant is fake is because of the layers of dust! While you won’t need to water or prune your plants, make sure that you dust or wipe them with a damp cloth every so often. Fake flowers can fade, so make sure that you replace them when needed.
What fake flower arrangement will you make?

Great tips! One of the ways that I was taught to keep my fake flowers clean was to put a cup of salt in a paper bag and put the stems in with it – shake it up and the salt will attract the dust – it really works and doesn’t damage the fabric of the flowers!
