I have seen these balloon flip flops all over the net, and when one of my favorite blogs, About A Mom, posted their success with this project, I knew I had to give it a go too!
The concept is simple. Buy a pair of cheap flip flops (you can often get these for $2.00 or less) and embellish them! I have seen flip flops with ribbons, rhinestones, yarn, flowers, and more. I thought my 13 year old daughter would get a kick out of making some fun flip flops so I set off in search of supplies.
I bought the flip flops at Walmart for $1.99. They were out of every color except blue in her size (M 7-8). If you have larger feet you are in luck. They had every color in the 9-10 size! Then I headed over to the Summer section to find water balloons – nothing! There wasn’t a single pack. I tried CVS and Target and still couldn’t find any. This project was starting to add up in cost just due to the gas I was wasting driving to all these stores. Finally, I found them at our local party store. I bought three packs of balloons at $1.99 each in three different colors – yellow, green and pink. Each pack had 100 water balloons.
The Project
Cheap Flip Flops
150 Water Balloons (we used about half a pack of each of the three packs I bought)
Tie each water balloon on the flip flop (you must knot the balloons or they fall off). As you tie each one, move it close to the previous one. You want the balloons really close on the flip flop to make the balloons look festive!
The balloons should be tied with the knot facing out. You want the smooth side next to your feet. We ended up tying balloons onto the front section of the flip flop as well.
After you are finished, pull on the balloons to fluff them a bit.
My daughter had a fun time making these flip flops! This is a perfect project for ages 12 and up. My son, who is ten, tried tying the balloons and was frustrated. Smaller children would find it difficult to complete this project.

Oh my! Those are adorable!!! I had seen the ribbon ones, but I really love these 🙂 I wonder if the dollar store would have those balloons?

I didn’t think to check the dollar store. We don’t have a good one that is close. Next time!
